Are There Differential Effects of Price and Policy on College Students' Drinking Intensity?

    Get PDF
This paper investigates whether college students' response to alcohol price and policies differ according to their drinking intensity. Individual level data on drinking behavior, price paid per drink, and college alcohol policies come from the student and administrator components of the 1997 and 1999 waves of the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) College Alcohol Study (CAS). Students drinking behavior is classified on the basis of the number of drinks they typically consume on a drinking occasion, and the number of times they have been drunk during the 30 days prior to survey. A generalized ordered logit model is used to determine whether key variables impact differentially the odds of drinking and the odds of heavy drinking. We find that students who faced a higher money price for alcohol are less likely to make the transition from abstainer to moderate drinker and moderate drinker to heavy drinker, and this effect is equal across thresholds. Campus bans on the use of alcohol are a greater deterrent to moving from abstainer to moderate drinker than moderate drinker to heavy drinker.

On Some Edge Folkman Numbers Small and Large

    Get PDF
Edge Folkman numbers Fe(G1, G2; k) can be viewed as a generalization of more commonly studied Ramsey numbers. Fe(G1, G2; k) is defined as the smallest order of any Kk -free graph F such that any red-blue coloring of the edges of F contains either a red G1 or a blue G2. In this note, first we discuss edge Folkman numbers involving graphs Js = Ks − e, including the results Fe(J3, Kn; n + 1) = 2n − 1, Fe(J3, Jn; n) = 2n − 1, and Fe(J3, Jn; n + 1) = 2n − 3. Our modification of computational methods used previously in the study of classical Folkman numbers is applied to obtain upper bounds on Fe(J4, J4; k) for all k \u3e 4

Important of adequate legislation from the perspective of solid waste management policy / Haidy Henry Dusim, Mohammad Tahir Mapa and Jenny @ Janey Mosikon

Most studies on sustainable solid waste management issues have been commonly focused on the technical perspective although studies also indicated that these issues are also strongly influenced by other aspects such as policy, social, economy, institutional and the environment. The aspect of policy plays an important role towards the sustainability of solid waste management, however studies focusing on analysing the solid waste management from the perspective of policy are still lacking. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to highlight the aspect of policy in the context of solid waste management specifically in the adequacy of the legislation. Previous studies have pointed out that adequate legislation plays an important factor towards influencing the aspect of policy in solid waste management as with the lack of adequate legislation, the policy may not be effective towards achieving sustainable solid waste management. In addition, previous studies may have not clearly explained the meaning of the term adequate legislation and the elements under adequate legislation. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore the meaning of adequate legislation and to identify the important elements that make up an adequate legislation. Findings of this study have show that an adequate legislation refers to having comprehensive legislation and specific legislation. This study also discovers that comprehensive legislation and specific legislation is considered as the two important elements under the adequate legislation

Alcohol and Marijuana Use Among College Students: Economic Complements or Substitutes?

    Get PDF
College campuses have been cracking down on underage and binge drinking in light of recent highly publicized student deaths. Although there is evidence showing that stricter college alcohol policies have been effective at discouraging both drinking in general and frequent binge drinking on college campuses, recent evidence from the Harvard School Of Public Health College Alcohol Study (CAS) shows that marijuana use among college students rose 22 percent between 1993 and 1999. Are current policies aimed at reducing alcohol consumption inadvertently encouraging marijuana use? This paper begins to address this question by investigating the relationship between the demands for alcohol and marijuana for college students using data from the 1993, 1997 and 1999 CAS. We find that alcohol and marijuana are economic complements and that policies that increase the full price of alcohol decrease participation in marijuana use.

Forensic Psychological Perspectives in Deterring the Impact of Acts of Terrorism from ISIS and Khorasan: An Antiterrorism

    Get PDF
Terrorism is a serious issue that affects lives around the world. Is there a way to deter terrorists from engaging in terrorist attacks? According to the Federal Bureau Investigation (FBI), there are two types of terrorism to consider: domestic and international. For the purpose of this paper, international terrorism is defined as terrorism that takes place outside of the jurisdiction of the United States and domestic terrorism occurs in the United States (FBI, 2011). Terrorism has varying definitions depending on the country and agency enforcing terrorism laws. The United Nations does not have an agreed upon definition and Bruce (2013) argued that without an agreed upon definition, counterterrorism measures will not be effective. This paper will focus deterrence of terrorist acts by Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and Khorasan from a forensic psychological perspective
